At the tip of the Dampier Peninsular, north of Broome is Cape Leveque. Postcard perfect red cliffs meet white sand before melting into turquoise water. It is stunning.
It is a 3-hour drive across a pretty bumpy sand/dirt road (4wd only, although we saw a few station wagons who had made it!) to get to the cape and the land is native title. The local aboriginal community offers a range of accommodation at the cape from un-powered camping to very civilized cabins. Spaces are very limited however and we were only able to stay at the cape due to a lucky cancellation. There was not much to do at the cape but relax by the ocean side with the dramatic scenery and that’s exactly what we did!
A bushfire was very close to the campsite however, and a windy night meant that we didn’t get a good nights sleep amidst the smoke and the wind. Thankfully, waking up at the beach kept our spirits high!
