Kalbarri National Park

Our first night in Kalbarri was also our first at a Main Roads Western Australia Rest Area. Whilst some would call it a nice place to pull over, we called it a cheap caravan park and proceeded to grab a spot and pitch our tent! The rest area was on the banks of the Murchison River and it was to be the attraction of the following day as we headed into the National Park renowned for its wild flowers.

The walk we chose to do was the longest (marked) walk in the park at 9kms and we were greeted to another of Kalbarri’s attractions, ‘Nature’s Window’. The sedimentary rock in the gorge carved by the Murchison River was certainly impressive and put any of the ‘zebra rock’ we had seen earlier on our trip to shame.

The park also holds some coastal gorges which we were excited to explore. After visiting the first coastal attraction, Castle Rock, our excitement quickly vanished as the second coastal attraction, Island Rock, was in fact coastal attraction number one, simply from the other side!

We found that the coastal cliffs and gorges were a magnificent representation of the oceans mighty power with the waves battering the rugged cliffs. However the true gem of Kalbarri is the inland gorge carved by the persistence of the mighty Murchison.

Somehow, after all these kilometres we are still getting along great… most of the time…
