Lets Get Rolling

After a delayed departure from Brisbane, we have finally managed to get some K’s under our wheels! We write this from a rainy camp site in Airlie Beach while we stay put and hope for the weather to clear! Whitehaven beach is teasing us as we camp near the harbour and heliport waiting for the sun.

We spent our first night at the Wurtulla Beach holiday house, the exotic sunshine coast! We joked about being so disorganised that we only make it as far as the Sunshine Coast on our first day and true to form, Rob came through with flying colours!

As he fiddled around preparing the car, I went for a walk in the sun along the beach and found the most amazing piece of love heart shaped coral! The lucky find was the highlight of my day!

Day two saw us arrive in the historical town of 1770. It is the site of the first landing of the Endeavour in QLD. Joseph Banks himself came ashore at that very point and collected over 33 plant specimens. The sleepy sea side town didn’t have much to it, yet the caravan park was packed with grey nomads who were happy to share stories and advice. We also enjoyed a slow beachside walk to help us get in holiday mode.

We spent day 3 on the road and passed a few highlights such as the Big Crab at Mirramvale and crossing the tropic of Capricorn in Rockhampton. We are now officially in the tropics!

After spending the day trying to make up K’s after our delayed start, last night we spent the night sleeping beside the road and the train line. It also happened to be right on the waterfront and dawn this morning gave us a spectacular show of colour to say good morning.

With excitement we headed off early to make tracks for the Whitsunday’s only to find ourselves greeted with dark skies and rain. We headed to the rainforest on our way int town hoping to give the weather some time to clear. We had lunch at the beautiful Cedar Creek Falls, which unfortunately isn’t flowing at this time of year. It was a gorgeous clear pool none the less and we enjoyed skipping rocks on the water.

Unfortunately, it continued to rain and bucket down all afternoon. We have bunkered down in a friendly caravan park which thankfully isn’t beside a highway or train line.  It is however right next to the airport and we could literally walk the 10 metres straight onto the runway. There isn’t a fence or anything!

We will spend the next few days pottering around town and seeing what Airlie Beach has to offer  and give the bad weather the chance to blow away. Hopefully we will get some beach time soon!

Will keep you posted. x
